John Gommans

Dr John Gommans is a Specialist Physician in Internal and Geriatric Medicine with a clinical and research focus on stroke care. For over three decades, he has worked alongside stroke-affected communities across New Zealand, contributing to stroke prevention, acute treatment and rehabilitation in both hospital and community settings.
In addition to his clinical and academic contributions, John brings significant governance experience. He served as Chief Medical and Dental Officer for Hawke’s Bay District Health Board from 2010 to 2018, and has held leadership roles across several professional bodies. These include Past President and Director of the Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand, President of the New Zealand Geriatric Society during its amalgamation with its Australian counterpart, and Chair of the NZ Adult Medicine Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
John’s enduring dedication to stroke medicine and his leadership across clinical, academic, and governance domains make him a vital contributor to Stroke Aotearoa’s Board.
