The team at Stroke Aotearoa New Zealand congratulate Jamie Summers for his recent win in the Building Institute Aotearoa Building People Awards.

Jamie, who is Project Director of the Building Intelligence Group, faced incredible challenges after he was severely impacted by a stroke in 2019 (at the age of just 39 years old). Rather than be defeated by it, Jamie turned his attention to helping others.

Through the Health15 initiative, Jamie has partnered with Stroke Aotearoa New Zealand and other health and wellness charities to bring life-saving cardiovascular screenings to construction workers on-site.

“80% of all strokes are preventable with some really early intervention, so that’s where Health15 can help.”

Health15 meets workers where they are at, in a language they understand, and with genuine care.

Through Jamie’s tireless efforts, almost 2,000 people on construction sites across the country have benefitted from Health15 to date – people who can sometimes fall through the cracks.

Jamie won the Southbase Construction Wairuatanga award which recognises excellence in health, safety and wellbeing. The judges commented that Jamie’s leadership in Health15 is, “changing the way health and wellbeing are approached in construction.”

Well done Jamie. You are a champion and this recognition is well-deserved for your extraordinary efforts in helping save lives.
