Supporting stroke recovery through art

By Stroke Aotearoa

Harish Harish uses art as a form of expression and outlet for his creativity after stroke.

Harish and Sandy

Harish Harish has always been a creative man. But after experiencing a stroke four years ago, he was struggling to get back to his artistic ways.

He applied to the JGS Reid Memorial Trust Fund – a trust administered by Stroke Aotearoa New Zealand – to attend art classes.

His application was granted, with the funding covering his classes at Mapura Studios and helping enormously with his recovery.

This photo is from the exhibition his class held to showcase their art. Family and friends were all invited – and so was Stroke Aotearoa.

Sandy Barnes, a Stroke Aotearoa Return to Work Advisor, attended and got to see the results of Harish's hard work and creativity in person.

Sandy says:

“It was certainly a lovely experience. Harish and his wife were very excited to have us attend.”

If you are interested in applying for funding from the JGS Reid Memorial Trust:

The Fund is open to people who have had a stroke, be living in the Auckland region and be asking for something to “provide assistance to one or more stroke people, their caregivers and their families” and can be used for stroke related activities or equipment.

To access the application form, email help@stroke.org.nz or call 0800 STROKE (0800 78 76 53).
